WHAT IS FINITE VERB?

A Finite-Verb is limited or controlled by person (First Person, Second Person, Third Person), number of the subject and changes its forms according to tenses.

WHAT IS NON-FINITE VERB?

A Non-Finite verb is not limited or controlled by person, number of the subject, therefore called the verb infinite or simply the Infinitive.

More examples of Infinitive:

To err is human.
They like to play cricket.
The child was about to cry.
Her habit is to dream in the office.
The students are anxious to know the marks.
She tried to get everyone's sympathy.
We saw him dance.

More examples of Present Participle functioning as an Adjective:

The creaking door awakened me.

A lying witness should be punished.

Education is the most pressing need of the time.

A rolling stone seemed to be heavy.

I saw a girl dancing in the hall.

More examples of Gerund:

Rahul hates travelling.

We are sorry for troubling you.

Watching a drama is interesting.

My sister loves singing.

They have stopped running.

He tried walking.

She is fond of singing.

He is tired of writing.

The child was punished for stealing.

What are homographs?

The words which are spelt the same but differ in meaning, origin or pronunciation are called homographs.

Homo=same                Graph=write

Look at these sentences:

I wind a piece of cloth around my head.

The cold wind made my teeth chatter.

The word 'wind' is spelt the same in both the sentences but has a different pronunciation and meaning in each.

In the first sentence, its suggests circular motion to wrap something around a centre. It is pronounced as: vaa[nD

In the second sentence, it means wind that blows.  Here it is pronounced as: ivanD

Such pairs of words are Homographs.

contract (N)  कॉन्ट्रॅक्ट

An agreement between two parties 

contract(V)  कन्ट्रॅक्ट

To draw together, to shorten        

content (N) कॉन्टेंड

That which is contained

content (V) कन्टेंड

 To satisfy

A weapon for shooting arrows

A formal way of greeting or showing respect.

What are homophones?

Homophones are the words that pronounced the same but differ in meaning, origin and spelling. 

Home=same           Phone=sound (pronunciation)

Look at the following sentence:

You have no right to write an application.

In the above sentence, the pronunciation of the words 'right' and 'write' is the same, but they are spelt differently and even their meanings are also different. The word 'right' means legal entitlement whereas the word 'write' means to form words on the surface.

Let us see more examples:

1. I have seen a beautiful scene.

2. Dear students, look at the picture of deer.

3. My son loves to lie in the sun.

4. Our parents will arrive in an hour.

5. Males seem to send more mails. 

What are homonyms?

Homonyms are words which are pronounced and spelt the same but have different meanings and origins. 

Look at the following sentence:

The boy stood at the river bank.

My father went to the bank to deposit some money.

In these sentences the word bank is written and pronounced in the same way but has different meanings.

In the sentence, 'The boy stood at the river bank' it means the side of the river.

In the second sentence, 'My father went to the bank to deposit some money', it means a place where you put your money for safe-keeping.
