Ans-Review of the film-'SHOLAY'

Title of the film-SHOLAY

From the last five decades, the film 'Sholay' is known as a hit film in Bollywood. There are various elements that have made this movie blockbuster in the film industry. Sholay is considered a classic and one of the best Indian films.

The film 'Sholay' was produced by G. P. Shippy and directed by Ramesh Shippy. This adventure film is written by well-known duo of Hindi Salim-Javed who are also famous for the films like Deewar, Mr. India, Zanjeer etc. The music maestro is R. D. Burman for the songs in this film and the lyrics were written by Anand Baksi.  The song 'Ye Dosti' has everlasting memory for the fans of this film.

All the events in this film are well-arranged and told systematically. Definitely, one event leads to another episode smoothly throughout the film. The retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) with the help of Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachhan) tries to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Hema Malini as Basanti and Jaya Bahaduri as Radha play vital roles in the story of this film. Soorma Bhopali's Bhopali accent and jailer's comic way of communication really make us laugh in this film.

The film Sholay was shot in Ramnagara, in the southern state Karnataka, over the span of two and half year having the length of 198 minutes.

When realized how much Thakur has suffered from Gabbar, Veeru and Jai decide not to take money as a reward and promise Thakur of capturing Gabbar alive. All characters including Sambha and Kalia performed well in this film. Amjad Khan after performed as Gabbar , a villainous character, he gained a lot of popularity.

The film 'Sholay' is really well-directed and being a perfect fusion of varied cinematic element, this film owes commendable cinematography.

Inclusively, the film Sholay is first rate movie.

Write a review of a film that you have recently seen in about 100/150 words.

Ans-Review of the film 'Baghban'

Title of the film-BAGHBAN

Before two decades,  Hindi film named 'Baghban' was released on 3 October 2003. This film is not a portrayal of any individual but it is about the conflict between the past and future in the life of all old parents. The film depicts the realistic picture of weary shoulders and trembling hands of old parents with which their children learnt how to walk. The film also throws light on how the generation gap affects the relationships between old parents and their children.

In fact, the idea for the film Baghban came to producer B. R. Chopra during his tour across Europe in the 1960s when he stayed at a hotel next to a retirement house. Therefore the story of this film was written by B. R. Chopra and directed by his son Ravi Chopra. Aadesh Shrivastav composed the soundtrack for this film and lyrics were written by Sameer. The story of the film was written by B. R. Chopra along with co-writers Achala Nagar, Satish Bhatnagar, Ram Govind and Shafiq Ansari.

The story or plot of the film revolves around the family of Raj Malhotra(Amitabh Bachhan) his wife, Pooja (Hema Malini) who have been married for 40 years. After retirement, Raj and Pooja want to lead their life with their four sons Ajay, Sanjay, Rohit and Karan. They also have adopted son Alok (Salman Khan) who marries Arpita (Mahima Chaudhary). Their sons want to split them and think they may refuse the offer but Raj and Pooja accept to live with them separately. After receiving poor treatment from their sons, both write each other about pain their separation has caused. Finally, they leave the house and when their sons ask their parents to forgive them but Raj and Pooja refused to do so. However, Alok helps them before the publication of the Raj's book 'Baghban'. All the events and episode in this film are skillfully interwoven altogether.

When Chopra revived it, principal photography began in July 2002 in Film City with cinematographer Barun Mukharjee.

As a whole, the director has been successful in coming with good performances from the lead actors. The film has definite moral. The children should remember what struggle, hard work their parents went through to make their sons' lives happy, comfortable and successful. The film also makes us aware of the fact that children should always respect and love old parents and be often grateful to them for what they have done for them.

3. EXPANSION OF IDEA

Expansion of idea is to elaborate an idea in a paragraph form.

Paragraph: A Para is necessarily a series of connected sentences which develops one topic sentence.

Topic sentence: It is a subject/proposition/ statement expressed in a sentence. A good topic sentence is brief and encapsulates the central theme.

Ideally it is written in three parts-

(1) Introductory para

(2) Core content

(3) Concluding para.

(Note : Topic sentence can never be removed from a paragraph.)

Expand the idea inherent in the following proverb-

Travel Broadens the Mind

Travelling is the best form of education, as learning from the environment is more effective. If you live all your life in the same place, you are like the proverbial frog in a well. You become narrow-minded. You do not know what the world outside is truly like. There is no doubt that travelling broadens the mind and enlivens the spirit. Apart from viewing of natural and historical sights, travelling enables a person to meet different people and study their customs, modes of dressing, culture and languages at close quarters. Meeting different people makes a person broad-minded and tolerant. Travelling brings people closer and broadens one's outlook. It removes prejudices and helps a person to become a citizen of the world in the true sense. Therefore, never lose any opportunity to travel. It will be an experience well worth the time and money spent on it. The world is a book and he who stays at home reads only one page.

A Bad Workman Always Blames His Tools

People can generally be classified into two groups those who have talents and those who have not. A really talented person succeeds in his work. He makes use of his abilities properly and achieves good results. He is confident of doing his work. He uses his tools in the right way, even if they are not excellent. At the same time, if a badly talented person even if given excellent tools, fails to achieve good results. His talents are limited. He tries to find lame excuses for his failure to achieve good results. He blames his tools for the bad work he has done. He does not want to admit that he is a bad workman. He deliberately forgets the fact that his talents are limited. Even if good opportunities are provided for the less talented person, he fails to exploit such chances and succeed in life. But if the talented person is given the right opportunity, he makes use of it to the full, thereby achieving his goal in life. While the former blames the opportunities and people around him for his failure, the latter without complaint utilizes them and succeeds in life.

Amrita: I'll do that. Bye and all the best.

Amrita had to leave for office. So she wrote a message for Sourajit.

Draft a message in about more than 50 words.

4. SUMMARY WRITING

What is summarizing?

The word ‘summary’ means substance, abstract, condensed statement. All these words mean the same thing at bottom. It is also called ‘precise-writing’. Simply speaking, summary means a condensation of a long passage reducing it to 1/3 of its length but easy to grasp the ideas from it.

How to summarize the given passage:

When a student is given a passage to summarize it, what he needs to do is to point out the main points and omit what is only subsidiary. For this, he is expected to make a summary as follows:

1. Read the given passage carefully at least for two times and get the contents of it. We cannot make a good summary unless we have carefully studied and understood the material we want to summarize.

2. Avoid all colloquial expressions, a catalogue of particular things, proverbs, quotations,  figures of speech, illustrations, reasons, arguments, and examples.

3. A summary should be written in reported speech.

4. A summary is always written in our own words.

5. To shorten the length of a passage, a word for a phrase, a phrase for a clause should be used.

6. In doing all activities, originality of the passage must not be lost. An original force of the given passage must be maintained in our summary.

7. Don’t add your own points though you have additional information about the contents of the passage.

8. A summary should be in all probability in one paragraph.

9. The language of the summary should be clear and simple.

10. It should not be longer than one third of the original passage.

11. Figurative language should not be used in summary.

12. Suggest suitable title.

Heading or Title:

From the examination point of view, we are asked to supply a suitable title or heading for our summary. Here we need to find some word, or phrase, or short sentence that will sum up the main subjects of the passage. This may serve as our heading or title we desire for.

Occasionally, the passage may have the topic sentence which can be used as the title or heading of the summary. This topic sentence is always found at the beginning or at the end. But if the subject matter is not clarified from the first or the last sentence, try to  get a clear idea of the subject  from the passage as whole, and condense it  in suitable heading, or find out some apt word or phrase from the given passage, and use that as title.

If the passage consists of a story, then select the major character or main event around which the whole story revolves, as the title of the summary.

Example:

Trees are useful to us in many ways. They give us cool shade. They also provide fruits to eat and firewood to burn. They give us timber to build houses with and various items of furniture. They also give us papers on which our books are printed.

More important than all this is that they supply the atmosphere with oxygen, which is essential for life. Here, by trees we mean all the vegetation including grass, shrubs, creepers, etc.

Animals and human beings breathe in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. Green plants absorb this carbon dioxide and, with the help of sunlight, turn it into food and oxygen. Carbon is used to make starch and oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

But most important of all, trees, and in fact all plants, help to protect the surface of the earth and prevent floods. Our earth has a covering of fine soil on the surface and this covering takes millions of years to form. But sometimes a single heavy shower washes away this valuable soil. This does not happen in forests or other places where there are plenty of trees. The tree stops the free flow of water and their roots hold the soil together, thus the soil is protected from being washed away. Moreover forest soil quickly absorbs rain water and thus helps to prevent sudden floods. (227 words)

Summary:

                        Trees Are Useful

Trees are very useful as they provide us with fruits, firewood, timber and paper. But most importantly, they provide oxygen, which is essential for us to live. They also prevent soil erosion and floods. Trees help to hold the soil together and the roots soak up water quickly, so flooding does not occur, nor does the soil wash away.(61 words)

SPEECH:

How to prepare an effective speech?

Introduction:

As man is a social being, he has to establish and maintain relationship with other people for various reasons. This can be done through the process of conversation. A conversation is a communication by two or more people, often on a particular topic. It is an ideal form of communication in some respect, since they allow people with different views of a topic to learn from each other.

A speech is one of the ways of communication. The speech occupies a vital place in all fields of our life. It is a multipurpose activity. It is an oral presentation by one person directed at a group. It is a goal oriented phenomenon. Therefore, one has to be clear, conscious and systematic in the preparation of his or her speech. It is used to motivate, to inform, to alert, to persuade, to gain the support and so on. Hence one must be aware of the following points while preparing the speech:

1. Determining the purpose

2. Sensible

3. Persuasive

4. Proper use of language

Beginning of the speech: The students should begin their script of speech with suitable salutation or greeting like 'Good morning everybody....!, Good morning to one and all.....!, and then the expressions like 'Respected principal, teachers, chief guest and my friends.... should be used.

(The topic of the speech should not be declared instantly after salutation or greeting)

Introduction: In the introduction, within a short time (with two or three sentences in written form) we have to invite the readers to the subject of our speech. We can begin either a challenging question or drastic statement or interesting quotation or funny joke etc. The speaker can also show the picture related to topic and ask question to the readers. It is necessary for the writer or the orator to make sure whether his or her opening leads to the subject of his/her speech.

Main Body of the Speech: After introduction, the writer of the script of the speech should introduce the topic on which he/she is going to prepare a draft of speech. Then,  we should make our most important points first so that the readers or audience know what it is. It is possible that we may have a number of points in our mind; in such situation one must make a list of the points in our order of priority. Some key words, phrases, expressions should be repeated to accomplish our purpose. Moreover, to make a speech lucid, smooth and systematic, we must use discoursal features like first, second, next, then, finally, consequently, eventually, etc.

Conclusion: The conclusion is our last chance to complete our target. The conclusion depends on our type of purpose. Here we can restate our ideas, use a quotation from a famous person. We need to suggest some solutions or remedies.

Ending:  We must thank you the audience and the organizers.

Prepare a short speech to be delivered before your class on “Eye Donation.”

Ans: Eye Donation

Good morning everybody…..!

Have you ever heard the name of John Milton in English literature? What is peculiar about him? You know he had gone completely blind in his adulthood. Do you know how painful is the blindness? Just try to shut your eyes for a moment…….What do you feel? Horrible, restlessness and uneasiness……. Only darkness! How long did that darkness last? For a moment! Can you imagine the condition of those people who suffer from blindness forever?

My friends, what is blindness all about? Today they call it ‘Visual Impairment.’ Can we help to solve this problem? Are you aware of the number of blind in India alone?

Friends, we who are blessed with the gift of Vision should do something ……

It is our social responsibility to try and reduce these numbers and the only way we can do that is by Donating our Eyes.

Friends, you can also help by joining voluntary organizations to promote Eye Donation.

Friends, you can bring light into the world of the Visually Impaired. Spread the word, create awareness, and persuade people to commit themselves to this act of Charity.

If you love humanity you will pledge your Eyes.

I thank you all respected dignitaries, my friends, chief guest and everybody who are present here.

NOTE-MAKING

What is note making?

The concept of ‘Note-making’ is an important activity in language. It shares some similarities as well as dissimilarities with another concept like 'Mind-Mapping', ‘Summarizing’. Note-making is an activity in which main points and sub-points are jotted down to keep ideas in our mind.

Purpose of note-making:

In fact the process of note-making serves various purposes in our study. Some of them are as follows:

1. To classify main points and subsidiary points.

2. To keep main ideas in our mind.

3. To revise or remind main points quickly.

4. It is a short cut to remember any long passage.

5. To strengthen or master key ideas.

How to make a note:

1. The given passage should be scanned or read once or twice and underline main points and subsidiary points.

2. The note should be made only with the help of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Generally, grammatical words such as articles, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions are avoided.

3. All the main points should be placed in a logical manner.

4. Important examples and points should be highlighted with underline.

5. Remember the note is never made with the help of complete sentences.

6. One must follow accuracy, neatness, clarity, etc. in note-making.

Types of note- making:

There are three types of note-making. They are as follows:

1. Tree diagram

2. Tabular diagram

3. Jotting or noting down main points and sub points

Note: 1.

Remember incomplete sentences are used in ‘Note-making’ and complete sentences are used in ‘Summarizing’.

Note: 2.

In the third type of note-making, Arabic numerals like 1, 2, 3… Roman numerals like I, II, III ….or i, ii, iii… Capital alphabets of English like A, B, C… Or small alphabets like a, b, c… symbols like *,,ì,.. are used to denote main and sub points. But once you select Arabic numeral 1 to denote the first main point, all the remaining main points should be denoted by next Arabic numerals i. e. 2, 3, 4… Similarly it also applies to sub points.

For example-1

 1. Read the following passage and complete the corresponding tree diagram.

Soil is an important part of our biosphere. It is the uppermost layer of the earth. Indeed soil, like water and air, supports life on the earth. The worth of soil was unknown to man. Man realized the real virtue of soil when he learnt the art of cultivating different types of

crops from the soil. Man wanted more food. So he cultivated more lands destroying jungles. This led to soil erosion.

We cannot blame man alone for soil erosion. Different natural factors also are responsible. Heavy winds, rains and forest fires also lead to soil erosion. Soil erosion has many bad effects. It has resulted in the conversion of many hectares of fertile land into barren waste lands. Heavy floods occur due to soil erosion. It is high time that man should prevent soil erosion. Man has started contour farming as preventive method. Dams and walls are made to prevent soil from being washed away.

• Why use Email?

The operating principle behind email is relatively simple, which has quickly made it the most popular service used on the Internet. As with a traditional postal service, for your message to reach your recipient, all you need to know is their address. Its two main advantages over "paper mail" are the speed at which the email is sent (practically instantaneous) and the lower cost (included with the cost of an Internet connection). What's more, email can be used to instantaneously send a message to several people at once.

Dos and Don'ts for E-mail Etiquettes.

Dos

1. Have a clear subject line. 2. Use a professional salutation. 3. Recheck your e-mail. 4. Keep private material confidential. 5. Keep your email short and flawless. Stay concise. 6. Check your attachments before sending. 7. Include your name or a signature with additional details and contact information. Don't forward email without permission

Don'ts

1. Don’t forget your signature. 2. Don’t use humour and sarcasm. 3. Don’t assume the recipient knows what you are talking about. 4.Don’t punctuate poorly. 5.Don't hit 'Reply All'. 6. Don’t think that no one but the intended recipient will see your email. (No predictions) 7.Don't forward email without permission.

List of information to be included in the email message-

1. Subject Line

Don't forget to include a clear Subject Line in your email. Use the subject line to summarize why you are emailing. Some examples of strong subject lines.

2. Salutation

Use an appropriate salutation

3. First Paragraph

The first paragraph of your email should include information on why you are writing. Be clear and direct.

4. Middle Paragraph

It is little bit descriptive about what you have mentioned in the first paragraph. Be concise and flawless with relevant punctuation.

5. Final Paragraph

Conclude your message with proper words as per the subject.

6. Email Signature

First Name, Last Name

How to CC and BCC properly:

The carbon copy (CC) and blind carbon copy (BCC) tools are tricky. Sometimes they're useful, but if used improperly, they can be problematic

Personal tragedies have not left been left out. The time when he lost his father and how he felt when conferred with many awards like the Padma Bhushan have been written in much detail.

The second half of the book deals with the author, the scientist who made a significant contribution in developing the country's guided missile program, a pioneering effort for the security of the nation.

My view

I hope this book is best suited for reading for teenagers and youths, to dream and to dare. It shows, how a person from a modest background ends up being the first citizen of a nation of one billion.

In this book, there is something that everybody can extract from and worthy of being read by every Indian. A very detailed description of how great things can be achieved through simple thoughts. Always keep your dream high, set your goals clear, plan perfectly and work through people. I will suggest never miss reading this great book if you haven’t yet.

Language: Marathi

About the Author

Former librarian and an avid reader, the author has written this book in 1979 and has followed up with numerous books.

About the Book

Recently I have read a book by Veena Gavankar. The book is in Marathi on the life of George Washington Carver. It is a biography of the great a researcher of 19th century. George was the son of Mary a negro slave. She was living with Mozes Carver's family as he has bought her. One day Mary and her son were taken away by some dacoits to resell the slaves as were the practice in those days. Mozes tried to get back them and he succeeded in getting back only Mary's son in exchange of a horse. Mozes and his wife Suazanbai brought up this child as their child. He developed his interest in gardening. He was very weak and dumb child.

He was sent to Neose for schooling. It was a school for Negroes. By doing some odd jobs, he completed his schooling. He developed interest in painting and music too. He was good at education and started to speak without staggering. He was neglected higher education at Highland University because he was black. He got admission in State Lowa College.

George got his MS degree in Agriculture and Bacterial Botany and become a professor of the same. Then he was invited in the school of Tuskegee. He accepted the invitation and joined the school. Here he joined hands with Dr. Washington Booker to serve his people. He did many researches there for the welfare of farmers nearby. George Carver invented peanut butter, paints and cotton product. He prepared laboratory instruments from the waste. He made researches in groundnut, sweet root, cotton. He discovered some eatables.

My view

The book is very interesting. The narrator creates mental picture of that period before us. The language used here is simple and appropriate to the period. While reading the book, we became the part of it. The author of this book Veeena Gavankar has used her unique style giving details. The book introduces us with great researcher. It teaches us the hard work sacrifice and gratitude.

Personality Development

Personality development is the relatively long-lasting pattern of bringing positive change in thoughts, feelings, and behaviour that distinguish individuals from one another. It means enhancing and grooming one’s outer and inner self to bring about a positive change in life.

Each individual has a distinct persona that can be developed, polished and refined. The whole process of this development takes place over a period of time. Here are the few things that you can work out.

·         Smile. And smile some more. It adds to your face value and to your personality as well.

·         Read a few articles in the newspaper loudly. This will help in communicating fluently.

·         Follow table manners and etiquettes.

·         Take good care of health.

·         Prepare a chart that mentions your strength and weaknesses. Now concentrate on the letter and find ways to improve upon the same.

·         Spend some time alone concentrating on you and yourself alone.

·         Practice meditation and yoga. It will help you develop inner peace and harmony that will reflect outside.

·         Do not live a monotonous life. Be creative and do something new all the time. Nothing greater than the joy of creative satisfaction.

Personality development is gaining more and importance because it enables people to create a good impression about themselves on others; it helps them to build and develop relationship, helps in your career growth and also helps to improve your financial needs.

After all, personality development is nothing but a tool helps you realize your capabilities and your strength making you a strong, a happier and a cheerful person.

What is an appeal?

Appeal-Handout/pamphlet/brochure:

The ‘Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary’ defines the word ‘Appeal’ as ‘an urgent and deeply felt request for money, help and information especially made by a charity or by the police’. An appeal is made either in the leaflet or handout or pamphlet or brochure. These are distributed among the public mostly by small business organizations, institutions, societies, communities, political parties and tourism industry. The basic purpose of this distribution is to spread their terms and conditions and qualitative features. Sometimes, they are drafted and distributed for fair and reasonable cause. Mostly and basically, the aim is to persuade and attract maximum people or customers. Therefore an appeal needs to be made in a particular language and style. It has to follow certain stylistic and linguistic features to catch an attention of public.

 Language and other features:

 1. A catchy or attractive but block and bold headline.

    e. g.  GRAND (BRF) BLIND RELIEF FUND RALLY

2. An equally effective concluding line.

        e. g. Make this rally a grand success for the blind and be a light to those in the dark.

3.  The points or details in the handout should be included in proper sequence. Some of the points should be highlighted.

4. Effective words and phrases should be employed for persuasion.

              e. g. grand success, noble cause etc.

5. Appropriate proverbs, saying and quotations should be used in accordance with the subject at a time.

e.g. Earth has for everybody’s need but not for anybody’s need.

6. Slogans are used to suggest an idea or a purpose quickly.

          e. g.  An eye for an eye, come one and come all etc

7. Sometimes an abrupt conclusion can be used to lead to curiosity.
