Oral Examination-Key Information

(Annual Oral Examination-2023-24)

The format of oral exam given below is in the subject of English language.

Total Marks:20

1.   Listening skill:10Marks

2.   Speaking skill:10Marks

Before the students write given sentences or questions based on short story/short poem, the students are expected to write their full name, name of the college, stream, class, division, Roll No. etc. on the paper provided by a college.

                            

A.   Listen to the sentences carefully and write them correctly. 5Marks

(The sentences may consist of homophones)

While writing sentences from activity A, students need to be careful about the following instructions:

Listen to each sentence with concentration to the end for two times.

Use correct spelling of words.

Use punctuation marks and capital and small letters wherever necessary.

Avoid grammatical mistakes (tense)

Avoid overwriting.

Before solving the activities from B, listen to the story for two times, try to understand the whole story and its theme, characters in the story, beginning, middle and end of the story, read the questions set on the story for two times and try to understand them  and then write the answers  of these questions.

Before solving the activities from C, listen to the poem for two times, try to understand the given poem and its gist /subject, meaning of the poem, poetic devices like figures of speech used in the poem, pairs of rhyming words used in the poem, read the questions for two times and try to understand them and then write the answers of these questions.

Once you write all the activities on the paper, confirm your answers for the second time and then submit the answersheet to the examiner.

 * The teacher can arrange  any two activities from the above. 

Scheme of marking for listening skill:

For five sentences:

Ability to focus on the words                  1 Mark

Listening for details and Retention        2 Marks

Accuracy of answers on understanding 2 Marks

For short poem:

Gist of the poem                                       2 Marks

Figure of speech                                       1 Mark

Pairs of rhyming words                           2 Marks

For short story

Theme of the story                                   2 Marks

Moral/Message in the story                    2 Marks

Self-opinion about the story                   1 Mark

2. Speaking skill: 10 Marks

In the speaking skill, the teacher can arrange various activities like follows to test the speaking skill. The students are either expected to choose a topic to express his views/thoughts on it or the topic will be given by the teacher before the oral examination or the teacher can arrange different activities for the different students in each batch.

1.   Extempore topic

2.   Debate on a given topic

3.   Discussion on a topic among 2/4 students.

4.   Role play

5.   Presentation

6.   Tell something

Marking Scheme for speaking skill:

Comprehension/understanding of topic                    2 Marks

Preparation/Participation/Interaction/Pronunciation 2 Marks

Body language/Tone/Vocabulary/Grammar           2 Marks

Content/Novelty of ideas/Fluency                            2 Marks
