2.1   Cherry Tree-Ruskin Bond

A1. Global Understanding

  State whether the following statements are true or false. Correct the false statements.

1.   The poet placed the cherry seed before ten years.

2.   The cherry tree had an instinct to survive.

3.   The blossoms are fragile.

4.   There were no new shoots to the cherry tree in the spring.

 

A2 Interpretation

The life of the cherry tree was threatened. Give reasons.

 

A3 Personal Response

Give at least four reasons that are responsible for cutting the trees.

I found a tree had come to stay

A2- Interpretation

The life of the cherry tree was really threatened because of goats, grass cutters, monsoon blight which may cause a plant a disease. Moreover, the poet did not personally care or pay attention to the cherry tree still it grew up facing all these odds. 


A3-Personal Response

Trees are cut down for the following reasons-

1. for wood

2. to make wide road

3. to provide food for animals

4. to develop land of construction


A4-Poetic Device

The figure of speech in this line is 'Personification' as a tree is given human quality. other examples:

It was very small, five months child.- The cherry tree is treated as a child.

A5-Poetic Creativity

I want to plant a tree,

But I am not so free,

So I bring plastic plant, 

It teases me you can't, you can't 


Poetic Devices:

1. Alliteration

'Shrivelled the slender stem....' sound 's' is repeated.

'Its arms in a fresh fierce lust...' sound 'f' is repeated.

'Made a miracle from green growing pain...' sound 'm' and 'g' is repeated.

'....at the finches as they flew/And fitted through.....' sound 'f' is repeated.

'the sun san/swiftly....' sound 's' is repeated.

'who watched, wondering, while some time....' sound 'w' is repeated.

2. Personification

'A tree had come to stay'....The tree has been personified by giving human quality of coming to stay.

'The grass cutter scythe split it apart'...The grass cutter scythe is personified.

'a monsoon blight shrivelled'....Monsoon is personified.

'The young tree struggled'.... The young tree is personified by giving it the human quality of struggling.

The sleepiest breeze'....The breeze is personified.

'singing crickets'.....Crickets are personified.

'The young tree....thrust/Its arms in a fresh fierce lust'... The young tree is personified as it expresses its 'lust' like a human being.
