2.4 Poem-Upon Westminster Bridge-William Wordsworth-Compiled By-Dr. Salunkhe T. B.

Compiled By- Dr. Salunkhe T. B.

Class-XI

2.4  Poem-Upon Westminster Bridge

                                     William Wordsworth

About the poet:

The poet William Wordsworth was born on April, 1770, was one of the major English Romantic poets who was honoured 'Poet Laureate'. He is also known as a leading English Nature poet. 'Lyrical Ballads', his collection of poetry,  is considered his central work of Romantic Literary theory.

About the title: Upon Westminster Bridge

The poet William Wordsworth, with his sister, was passing through the city London early in the morning and he sees the Westminster Bridge that spans the river Thames in London. The scenes, weather are so beautiful that inspire the poet to write this poem 'Upon Westminster Bridge'. The title of this poem is really suitable as the poet describes various scenes and surrounding of this city London from the Westminster Bridge.
About the poem:

The poem 'Upon Westminster Bridge' is a Petrarchan Sonnet which is also known as Italian Sonnet in which William Wordsworth describes the beauty of the bridge as seen at dawn from the Westminster Bridge, London. The poet is driven to write this poem after viewing the panoramic landscape, beauty, clam and quiet nature before him. This poem was first published  in the 'Collection of Poems' in 1807.

This poem is a sonnet means it has fourteen lines and particular rhyme scheme.  This sonnet is devoted to the city of London and the river Thames and off course Westminster Bridge.

Explanation of poem:

The poem opens with the line 'Earth has not anything to show more fair'. In this line the word 'fair' means attractive and beautiful. The poet wants to say that is there anything more beautiful in the world  than what he sees from this bridge. Thus, the first line is the evidence of the outmost beauty of the place William Wordsworth views from the Westminster Bridge. The entire earth has nothing attractive than this sight. The first line reveals nothing but the excellence of the scenery experienced by the poet.

If someone passes by from this beautiful sight, and does not wish to appreciate or praise what he or she sees from the Westminster Bridge, then that person doesn't have perceptive attitude or ability because he or she is not able to judge the reality. In this line, the word 'soul' means the way or attitude to look at. If the majesty of this city remains unappreciated, it would be great loss for the passerby.  At this moment, the city of London wears the beauty of morning as any person wears the cloth. The city seems to wear the garment of beauty. The poet goes on describing the garment that the garment is silent and there is peace and tranquility everywhere. The word 'bare' makes clear that there is hardly anyone around. This is how the poet describes the silence and beauty of morning in the first five lines of the poem.

Further the poet William Wordsworth lists and describes what he sees in the entire city like ships, towers, domes, theatres and temples which lie open unto the fields and to the sky. Everything can be seen clearly as the city seems to have no pollution. The word 'smokeless' clarifies that the poet enjoys the purity of air in the morning. The air in the morning is so smokeless that everything seems to be bright and glittering.

Next, the poet describes the sun and its arrival. The words 'In his first splendour' means the rising sun, the sun is just about to come from the horizon and rising up to shine upon the entire city of London. So the parts of nature like  valley, rock, hill etc. are really good setting for the sun to shine upon. The poet feels that the sun has never shone more beautifully on nature that he has seen so far.

The river Thames smoothly flowing underneath the Westminster Bridge without disturbing the tranquility or silence of the night or dawn. It shows the poet sees even beauty in the way Thames flows.

In the last the poet talks about the people living in city of London. The people in their houses are asleep yet, and their hearts rest quiet. In other words, it can be said that people living the city are also experiencing the silence and tranquility of the morning.

Ans-Review of the film-'SHOLAY'

Title of the film-SHOLAY

From the last five decades, the film 'Sholay' is known as a hit film in Bollywood. There are various elements that have made this movie blockbuster in the film industry. Sholay is considered a classic and one of the best Indian films.

The film 'Sholay' was produced by G. P. Shippy and directed by Ramesh Shippy. This adventure film is written by well-known duo of Hindi Salim-Javed who are also famous for the films like Deewar, Mr. India, Zanjeer etc. The music maestro is R. D. Burman for the songs in this film and the lyrics were written by Anand Baksi.  The song 'Ye Dosti' has everlasting memory for the fans of this film.

All the events in this film are well-arranged and told systematically. Definitely, one event leads to another episode smoothly throughout the film. The retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) with the help of Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachhan) tries to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Hema Malini as Basanti and Jaya Bahaduri as Radha play vital roles in the story of this film. Soorma Bhopali's Bhopali accent and jailer's comic way of communication really make us laugh in this film.

The film Sholay was shot in Ramnagara, in the southern state Karnataka, over the span of two and half year having the length of 198 minutes.

When realized how much Thakur has suffered from Gabbar, Veeru and Jai decide not to take money as a reward and promise Thakur of capturing Gabbar alive. All characters including Sambha and Kalia performed well in this film. Amjad Khan after performed as Gabbar , a villainous character, he gained a lot of popularity.

The film 'Sholay' is really well-directed and being a perfect fusion of varied cinematic element, this film owes commendable cinematography.

Inclusively, the film Sholay is first rate movie.

Ans-Review of the film 'Baghban'

Title of the film-BAGHBAN

Before two decades,  Hindi film named 'Baghban' was released on 3 October 2003. This film is not a portrayal of any individual but it is about the conflict between the past and future in the life of all old parents. The film depicts the realistic picture of weary shoulders and trembling hands of old parents with which their children learnt how to walk. The film also throws light on how the generation gap affects the relationships between old parents and their children.

In fact, the idea for the film Baghban came to producer B. R. Chopra during his tour across Europe in the 1960s when he stayed at a hotel next to a retirement house. Therefore the story of this film was written by B. R. Chopra and directed by his son Ravi Chopra. Aadesh Shrivastav composed the soundtrack for this film and lyrics were written by Sameer. The story of the film was written by B. R. Chopra along with co-writers Achala Nagar, Satish Bhatnagar, Ram Govind and Shafiq Ansari.

The story or plot of the film revolves around the family of Raj Malhotra(Amitabh Bachhan) his wife, Pooja (Hema Malini) who have been married for 40 years. After retirement, Raj and Pooja want to lead their life with their four sons Ajay, Sanjay, Rohit and Karan. They also have adopted son Alok (Salman Khan) who marries Arpita (Mahima Chaudhary). Their sons want to split them and think they may refuse the offer but Raj and Pooja accept to live with them separately. After receiving poor treatment from their sons, both write each other about pain their separation has caused. Finally, they leave the house and when their sons ask their parents to forgive them but Raj and Pooja refused to do so. However, Alok helps them before the publication of the Raj's book 'Baghban'. All the events and episode in this film are skillfully interwoven altogether.

When Chopra revived it, principal photography began in July 2002 in Film City with cinematographer Barun Mukharjee.

As a whole, the director has been successful in coming with good performances from the lead actors. The film has definite moral. The children should remember what struggle, hard work their parents went through to make their sons' lives happy, comfortable and successful. The film also makes us aware of the fact that children should always respect and love old parents and be often grateful to them for what they have done for them.
